Biographical Note

Dorothy Stimson Bullitt was a broadcasting pioneer and Seattle, Washington, civic leader, 1892-1989. Her parents were Charles Douglas “C.D.” Stimson (1857-1929) – a leading figure in local lumber and real estate industries – and Harriet Overton Stimson (1862-1936) – an ex-music teacher and patron of the arts. Mrs. Bullitt grew up on First Hill in Seattle. She attended school at Briarcliffe Manor in New York from 1908 to 1911 and lived in New York City from 1913 to 1915. She returned to and lived in Seattle for a few years until her marriage in 1918 to Alexander Scott Bullitt (1877-1932), an attorney and politician from Louisville, Kentucky. For two years following their marriage, Scott and Dorothy Bullitt lived in Louisville but moved back to Seattle permanently in 1920.

In Seattle, Scott Bullitt worked alongside Dorothy Bullitt’s brother, Thomas Douglas Stimson (1884-1931), and her father in managing family business interests. Scott also continued his political career in Washington, running unsuccessfully in United States senate and gubernatorial races. Dorothy Bullitt herself remained on the sideline of family business, caring for her three children, Charles Stimson (“Stim,” 1919-), Dorothy Priscilla (“Patsy”/“Peach,” 1920-2003) and Harriet (1923- ). Dorothy Bullitt's father died in 1929 and her brother suffered a fatal airplane accident in 1931. The following year, Scott Bullitt became terminally ill with liver cancer and died on April 10, 1932. Following this string of tragedies, management of the Stimson Realty Company (later renamed the Bullitt Company) and other family affairs fell into Dorothy Bullitt’s hands.

Over the next decade, Dorothy Bullitt was occupied not only with the family businesses but also with various political and civic involvements. In 1932 she took her husband’s place as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In 1933 she was appointed commissioner of the Washington Emergency Relief Commission, which approved funding for such projects as the Washington State Arboretum and the Grand Coulee Dam, and chaired the National Women’s Committee of the Mobilization for Human Needs. During World War II, Bullitt served in the Volunteer Detachment of the Seattle Civilian War Commission.

In 1946 Bullitt’s business career took a drastic turn as she acquired a Seattle radio station, applied for a broadcasting license, and incorporated her first broadcasting company, Western Waves. In 1947 the company changed its station’s call letters from KEVR to KING and reincorporated as King Broadcasting. In 1949 King Broadcasting purchased KRSC TV - the only television station in the Pacific Northwest - and began broadcasting as KING-TV, channel 5. In 1954 KING expanded into Portland, Oregon, with the purchase of KGW radio. The next year KING beat out Westinghouse for a Portland television license, and in 1957 bought AM and FM radio stations, as well as television stations in Spokane, Washington. Through the years, King Broadcasting was the leader in Pacific Northwest television, with emphases on children’s and educational programming, mobile television, and quality news and cultural programming.

Dorothy Bullitt served as president of King Broadcasting until 1962, when her son Stimson Bullitt took her place. In 1971 Stimson stepped down from the presidency, and Ancil Payne became chief executive officer, while Mrs. Bullitt and her daughters – Priscilla Collins and Harriet Bullitt – remained on the executive committee.

While building KING’s broadcasting empire, Dorothy Bullitt maintained a high level of civic involvement. She served on the National Association of Broadcasters Television Code Review Board from 1952 to 1956 and 1959 to 1963; the University of Washington Board of Regents from 1958 to 1965; and the Washington State Canal Commission from 1961 to 1967.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Bullitt won a number of awards for her many achievements, including a personal Peabody award for her contributions to the field of broadcasting, Seattle’s First Citizen award from the Seattle Real Estate Board, honorary degrees, and other accolades.

Dorothy Stimson Bullitt remained an active member of King Broadcasting’s executive committee until her retirement in 1988. She died in her home in Seattle on June 29th, 1989.

Scope and Content
The Dorothy Stimson Bullitt papers document the activities, interests, and associations of Dorothy Stimson Bullitt and her family. A significant portion of these materials is correspondence between Dorothy Bullitt and Stimson family members. Dorothy Bullitt’s papers include a considerable amount of non-family correspondence, mostly letters to and from her associates in broadcasting, business, and politics. General correspondence with the Ohata family documents the relationship between Dorothy Bullitt and longtime household servant Fred Ohata and his family. The bulk of these letters date from 1942 and 1943, the period spanning Fred and Alice Ohata’s incarceration in a Portland, Oregon, assembly center and their eventual relocation to the east coast. The letters document Mrs. Bullitt’s help in finding work for Mr. and Mrs. Ohata, which was a crucial step in obtaining permission for their release.
Other major correspondents include: Dee Terry (also named Dee Bullitt and Dee Payson), Ancil Payne, Delphine Haley, Henry Colver (a suitor), King Broadcasting Company, the Metropolitan Building Company (Seattle), Okinawa Plywood, the Stimson Realty Company, Mobilization for Human Needs, the Seattle Civilian War Commission, the University of Washington Board of Regents, the Emergency Relief Commission (Washington), the Washington State Canal Commission, the Television Code Review Board of the National Association of Broadcasters, Olmsted Brothers, and Hearst Radio Inc.
Among Dorothy Bullitt’s personal papers are diaries and appointment books, which are interrelated because Mrs. Bullitt made diary-like entries in several of her appointment books. Books that contained a great deal of full, qualitative, reflective commentary were filed as diaries, and books that mostly contained brief notes and appointments were filed as appointment books. Researchers may want to review both series of material.
The remainder of Dorothy Bullitt’s personal papers and the family members’ papers primarily consist of personal papers and memorabilia. Exceptions to this include some of the subject files in Mrs. Bullitt’s papers, especially the “Politics” file, which includes most of the material documenting Bullitt’s political involvement. Also present are files on the various boards on which Bullitt served.
The bulk of the records documenting Stimson and Bullitt family business interests are found in the Family Businesses series. Some of Dorothy Bullitt’s King Broadcasting Company material can be found here. These records consist of personnel files, subject files, and a small amount of intraorganizational correspondence, and mostly date from the later years of KING. Accession 5269-002 contains more complete documentation of the company as a whole, from its inception in the 1930s to its sale in the early 1990s. The C.D. and Thomas Stimson files in the Family Papers series also contain limited documentation of family business concerns.
A. Scott Bullitt’s files contain information on his political campaigns in Louisville and Seattle; however, his lively political career in Washington State is largely undocumented. Whatever documentation once existed is believed to have been destroyed.
The Civic Involvement series mostly contains Dorothy Bullitt’s papers from organizations in which she participated; however, some of these papers are from other family members. In particular, Harriet Overton Stimson was the family member most involved in the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital, and for the most part these files consist of her materials.
The Delphine Haley series consists of research materials for and drafts of her biography Dorothy Stimson Bullitt: An Uncommon Life. Of particular interest are tapes and transcripts of interviews with Mrs. Bullitt that Ms. Haley conducted as part of her research. Haley was also responsible for the transcribed copies of incoming letters.

Processing Info: Intra-family correspondence was filed by recipient, except for the letters to and from Dorothy Bullitt’s son, C. Stimson Bullitt. All of his correspondence was filed separately in box 71, which holds restricted materials. Also, letters to or from the Stimson family as a group were filed as if they were to or from Harriet Overton Stimson, as the letters suggest that she conducted correspondence on behalf of the entire family.

King Broadcasting Company Records
Scope and Content: This series chiefly came from Dorothy Stimson Bullitt's office, but also contains materials from the offices of Gloria Chandler, director of the company's educational programming; of Henry Owen, long-time company manager; of Ancil Payne, chief executive officer (1971-1987); and from the offices of corporate attorneys George Willoughby and Jonathan Whetzel. This series documents the beginning of the company, its growth, and all its subsidiaries and parts: KING-TV, KING-AM and KING-FM; KGW-TV and KGW-AM; KINK; KREM, Seattle Magazine, King Screen Productions, and video and cable companies. Of interest to researchers will be those records relating to the independent local programming, both commercial and educational, done in the early years before national syndication became the norm. The filings and testimony at the Federal Communications Commission hearings leading to the acquisition of KGW (Portland, Oregon) are documented in this series, including correspondence with Andrew G. Haley, the Washington, D.C. attorney who represented KING in its dealings with the Federal Communications Commission. This series also contains correspondence addressed to various on-air personalities and intra-company memos about various aspects of production. There are records concerning promotions of all sorts, both television and radio, local and national. Also documented is King Broadcasting’s continual interest in and assistance to public broadcasting stations, particularly Seattle's Channel 9, and with the schools and universities in Seattle and Portland. Also included are awards of all types.
