C. Krishna Gairola was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. He
received an M.A. in history from the University of Allahabad, India, in 1946
and a Ph.D. in Indian history and archaeology from the University of London in
1949. He studied art history and completed a diploma de l’ecole at the School
of the Louvre, Paris, in 1953. After working for the embassy of India and the
Indian Foreign Service in Switzerland and New Delhi, he accepted a position as
professor and department head at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda,
India, in 1962. Gairola also worked as a journalist for the Hindustan Times and
Week End Review in New Delhi before immigrating to the United States in 1967.
In the United States, Gairola held professorships at Kansas State University,
the University of Washington, and Virginia Commonwealth University, before
retiring in 1987. We think that he made these slides for the classes he taught,
during various trips to India and South Asia from the 1950s to 2000. Among many
honors he received was the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, awarded by the
German government, as well as fellowships from the French government and the
Smithsonian Institution. Gairola died July 2003.
The collection is a unique set of images that includes a significant
