Biographical Note

Matthew Kangas was born in 1949 and attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He later studied at the University of Manchester and at Oxford University. Kangas worked in the art publishing industry in New York City until 1976, when he returned to Seattle and began writing about art. He has written for Art in America and Art Criticism, among other magazines; taught at the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle; and was an art critic for KCTS-TV (PBS), Seattle.

Some 1989-1990 correspondence was generated and received during his fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution. Includes correspondence with and writings about Michael Lawson, circa 1989-1993; correspondence, 1983-1991, about exhibits Kangas organized for Bumbershoot, an annual Seattle arts festival; and correspondence, circa 1980-1993, some of which relates to exhibits he curated.

Childhood papers include copies of the Nineteenth Street Viewpoint and related materials documenting Kangas's children's theater ventures from 1960 to 1964.
