Robert Ronald Leisy was born March 1, 1945 in Stockton, CA, and died in combat on December 2, 1969 in Phouc Long, Vietnam. Leisy grew up in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle; he graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1963, and the University of Washington in 1968.
Leisy served in the Army and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was deployed to Vietnam in September of 1969 and served as a rifle platoon leader in Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, part of the1st Cavalry Division. While conducting a reconnaissance patrol, Leisy's troops encountered and engaged with the North Vietnamese. Seeing that a rocket-propelled grenade was about to be fired, Leisy jumped to cover his platoon's radio operator in order to preserve communications. Leisy was wounded but remained calm and still gave orders to his platoon. He refused medical attention until all other serious injuries had been dealt with. The medic was unable to save him and Leisy died from his injuries.
Leisy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Nixon in 1971. Memorials were erected to Leisy at Fort Lawton in 1995 and the University of Washington in 2009.
