Biographical Note

Carsten Lien (b. 1926) is a past president of the Mountaineers, a Seattle-based hiking and climbing club formed in 1906. He is also a former vice-president of REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) and has been a Seattle mayoral candidate, among several other civic and corporate activities. Lien has authored two books: Olympic Battleground : The Power Politics Of Timber Preservation (San Francisco : Sierra Club Books, 1991) and Exploring The Olympic Mountains : Accounts Of The Earliest Expeditions, 1878-1890 (Seattle : Mountaineers Books, 2001).
