Biographical Note

Harvey H. Manning is a Northwest conservationist who has held offices in the Mountaineers and in the North Cascades Conservation Council. His career has included selling for radio station KISW, 1954-1957 and KXA, 1957; book salesman for Macmillan Company, 1957; Paper Editions, 1957; Rinehart and Company, 1958-1959; and Holt Rinehart and Winston, 1960. From 1961 to 1962 he was an agent for Sierra Club books. He has been primarily responsible for the publishing projects of the Mountaineers, having been chairman of the Literary Fund Committee for about ten years. He edited "Wild Cascades," publication of the North Cascades Conservation Council, and edits "Not Man Apart," publication of Friends of the Earth. Manning was an officer of the Issaquah Alps Trails Club.

Correspondence, writings, clippings, ephemera; circa 1970-1990.
Bulk of the accession is drafts of hiking guide books and other books authored by Manning as well as correspondence related to them and personal correspondence. Also present is source material, mainly clippings, which have been weeded, with those retained separated from writings for reason of preservation. Most of the foldering was placed in as logical as possible groups by the Special Collections Staff.

These drafts are chapters for a projected book by the North Cascades Conservation Council to tell of its efforts to protect the mountainous area in Washington State between Snoqualmie Pass and the Canadian border. Bulk of the material is unbound earlier drafts, but the final version, a spiral-bound "pre-publication draft" is titled "Conservation and Conflict: the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service in the North Cascades 1892-1992."
