The collection contains photograph albums documenting the activities
of The Mountaineers during the years 1907-1951. Activities included hiking,
climbing, skiing, snowshoeing and stage productions by The Mountaineers
Players. The photographs in the albums were made by club members during various
outings and the albums were put together and captioned by club members as well.
Photographers whose work is frequently represented in the collection include
Mabel Furry, William J. Maxwell, R.L. Dyer, Mabel Vanderpool Nash and Fairman
B. Lee. Several photographs by Asahel Curtis are also included in the
collection.
The collection is arranged into several subsets based upon
geographical locations of The Mountaineers' outings: I. Mt. Rainier. II.
Olympics. III. Mt. Baker/Glacier Peak. IV. Mt. Stuart/Mt. Daniel. V. Mt. Adams.
VI. Washington. VII. Canada. VIII. Montana. IX. Multiple Western Locations.
Within these geographical subsets, the albums are arranged chronologically.
When an album covers a range of years, the earliest date is used to place the
album into the chronology.
Restrictions might exist on reproduction, quotation, or publication.

The Mountaineers was formed in 1906 to explore the wild areas and
peaks surrounding Seattle. The Mountaineers was originally based on the shared
vision of Seattle businessman W. Montelius Price and renowned Seattle
photographer Asahel Curtis. Early members included Bertha Landes (later to
become mayor of Seattle), various members of the Curtis family and Edmond S.
Meany, history professor at the University of Washington, who was The
Mountaineers' president for over 25 years. Women were an important part of the
club from the earliest days; by 1907 half of the 151 registered members were
women. Many of the photographs in this collection were made by female
Mountaineers.
The highlight of the yearly activities was the annual summer outing.
These generally were for two or three weeks and involved climbs both major and
minor as well as hikes. Summer outings continued until 1980, when they were
discontinued due to the damage that a large group of campers could wreak on
their beloved wilderness.
Original activities consisted of hiking, climbing, skiing, snowshoeing
and stage productions by the Mountaineers Players. Today, The Mountaineers has
about 10,500 members. The club offers even more in the way of activities
including bicycling, photography, kayaking, sailing, international trips and
environmental education classes. The Mountaineers works to ensure that
wilderness areas are preserved and protected through the actions of their
Conservation, Recreation Resources and Stewardship divisions. Volunteer members
track issues, mobilize members, perform trail maintenance, work with coalitions
and lobby legislators, both local and national. The club's mission is to enrich
the community by helping people explore, conserve, learn about and enjoy the
lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest.
Numbers originally assigned to the albums have
been changed. A list of old album numbers is in the collection case file. Two
unnumbered albums were discovered in the collection and were added as 7b and
55b. The album titles listed in italics are taken directly from the album
covers.
