Biographical Note

John Osseward was a Seattle conservationist who was best known for his work with Olympic Park Associates (OPA), a citizens group that he founded and led. From its beginnings in 1948, OPA was concerned with the administration and protection of Olympic National Park, including issues such as boundary changes, logging, and road building. One particular concern centered on the inclusion of a strip of beach in the Olympic National Park and the prevention of road building there. On occasion, OPA also became involved in issues involving other wilderness areas.

John Osseward was also active in other conservation organizations. He was a founder of the Wilderness Bill Coordinating Committee, a trustee of National Parks Associates, a board member of the Wilderness Society, and a member of the North Cascades Conservation Council, the Mountaineers, and the Sierra Club. Osseward presented testimony at congressional and other hearings on behalf of many of these organizations. He died in Seattle in 1984.

Arrangement

Arranged in two accessions: Accession no. 3818-1, 1916-1983; and Accession no. 3818-2, 1949-1973.

Scope and Content

The John Osseward Papers reflect the activities and interests of the conservation organizations with which he was involved, as well as the research he conducted in preparation for his testimonies at congressional and other hearings, especially in the area of forest management and forestry practice. Well documented topics include the Olympic National Park and the Wilderness Bill. In addition to testimony, the papers include correspondence, minutes, financial records, committee records, reports, legislation, writings, subject files, newsletters, and ephemera.

Accession No. 3818-001
1916-1983
15 cubic feet (15 boxes)
Scope and Content
Accession no. 3818-1 has been arranged primarily according to the organizations with which Osseward was involved. Records are most voluminous for Olympic Park Associates, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs, the Mountaineers, the National Parks Association, the North Cascades Conservation Council, the Sierra Club, the Wilderness Bill Coordinating Committee, and the Wilderness Society. Researchers should note that information about a single topic or issue, such as the Wilderness Bill or the North Cascades, can be found scattered throughout the records of the various organizations that were concerned with it. The accession also includes Osseward's personal papers resulting from activities not affiliated with any organization in particular. Personal papers include correspondence, clippings, and a large subject series on conservation issues. Osseward was not consistent in his filing practices, and similar subject matter may be found under multiple file headings. Major correspondents in the accession include the U.S. National Park Service, Polly Dyer, Philip H. Zalesky, Patrick D. Goldsworthy, Leo Gallagher, and Brock Evans.
