Biographical Note

American poet and author Theodore Roethke was born on May 25, 1908, in Saginaw, Michigan. He received his A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1929 and his M.A. in 1936; he also was enrolled in the graduate program at Harvard University in 1930-1931. He married Beatrice Heath O'Connell on January 3, 1953. He died on August 1, 1963, on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

His taught English at a number of universities:

  • Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, instructor in English, 1935
  • Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, instructor, 1936-1939, assistant professor of English, 1939-1943, 1947
  • Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont, assistant professor of English, 1943-1946
  • University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, associate professor, 1947-1948, professor of English, 1948-1962, poet-in-residence, 1962-1963
  • Fulbright lecturer in Italy, 1955

This accession forms the main part of the Roethke papers. It includes correspondence, literary manuscripts, teaching files, the film In a Dark Time, and other miscellaneous material.

A copy of the film In a Dark Time is available for viewing at University of Washington, Instructional Media Service. Advance noticed is required for use.
Restrictions on Access
Microfilm should be used in lieu of the original writings whenever possible (e.g. Notebooks have been microfilmed). When permission is granted to use the original notebooks, they must be used one notebook at a time.

Scope and Content: The first part of this small series contains forms that Roethke had filled out-curriculum vitae for jobs and biographical volumes.
Processing Info: The biographical notes found after the forms have been culled from the Notes Series to be found elsewhere in the collection. Some are fragments of letters of application in rough draft form; some are drafts of statements of proposed work for foundation funds; some are parts of autobiographical statements to be used in conjunction with appearances of his work in various volumes.
