According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Thornton Fitzhugh's birth mother was born in Ohio; the 1900 U.S. Census, however, indicated her to have been born in Indiana. His brother was Phoenix architect, Lee Mason Fitzhugh, Jr., who designed the Gothic First Methodist Church, Glendale, CA.
