CARL TElKE THE SYMPHONIC BAND ******* PROGRAM NOTES DARIUS MILHAUD (1892-1974) wrote the SUITE FRANCAlSE, his first extended work for winds. in 1945 on a commission from the publisher, Leeds Music Cor? poration, as part of a contemplated series of original works for band by out? standing contemporary composers. Suite Francaise was given its first perform? ance by the Goldman Band in 1945. It was so successful that Milhaud was requested to rescore it for orchestra. The premiere of the orchestral edition was played by the New York Philharmonic. The composer provided the following notes about the work: "The five parts of this suite are named after French provinces. the very ones in which the American and Allied armies fought together with the French underground for the liberation of my country-Normandy, Brittany, Ile-de-France (of which Paris is the center), Alsace-Lorraine, and Provence. I used some folk tunes of the provinces. I wanted the young Americans to hear the popular melodies of those parts of France where their fathers and brothers fought to defeat the German invaders." STEVEN REINEKE has quickly established a national reputation as composer and Pops conductor, working closely with the Cincinnati Pops since 1995 and appearing as guest conductor with the Indianapolis Symphony, Toronto Sym? phony, and the National Symphony of Taiwan. He has composed music for nearly all instrumental mediums and has produced numerous recordings for Telarc. SEDONA, commissioned by the Kettering (Ohio) Civic Band on its 40th Anniversary, captures in musical form the natural landscape of mountains and wide-open spaces, painting a sound portrait conceptually reminiscent of Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite, My JESUS! OH, WHAT ANGUISH is one of a group of 69 so-called 'Sacred Songs and Airs' attributed to J. S. Bach, each of which exists only in the form of a single melodic line with figured bass. These pieces were first published in 1736, some 14 years before Bach's death, as the musical setting for a huge collection of 954 sacred songs and hymns assembled by Georg Christian Schemelli and edited by Bach himself. In 1832, they made their first appearance as an adden- FUITI!I Jessica Lee. Fr .? Biochemistry Valentine Luu, Fr. (+ Picc.) Amanda Ogden, Fr. (+ Pice.) Jr., Communications Arielle Anderson, Soph. Seattle dum to the 371 four-part, fully harmonized chorales in an edition published by C. F. Becker. Ever since that time, there has been some disagreement among musical scholars as to just how many of these 69 melodies were actually written by Bach himself, how many were merely arranged by him, or even if there were actually that number at all that were in any way composed or worked on by him. The standard Bach Gesellschaft edition, for instance, lists 75 such pieces, not 69, and, on the hand, on of the greatest authorities on German evangelical Church music, Johannes Zahn, claimed that only 21 of the 69 (or 75) should be consid? ered Bach's own work, and all of the rest credited to other composers. However this may be, it is interesting to observe that since the first separate appearance of this group of pieces in 1832, there have been at least eight other editions prepared by different authorities and published, and that the melody of My Jesus! appears in all of them; its authenticity as an original work from Bach's own hand seems never to have been questioned by any of the compilers and editors of these collections during the past 150 years. For all of its apparent simplicity of musical construction, this music is deeply moving and of great expressiveness. In the present realization for winds from the figured bass, Bach's harmonic intentions have been faithfully adhered to throughout, and except for choices of specific voicings and instrumental colors, nothing has been added to one of the most haunting and poignant expressions of sorrow and com? passion to be found in all of Westem music. WITH TRUMP AND WING was commissioned by and dedicated to Dr. JACK STAMP'S friend and colleague, Conductor and Commander Lt. Col. Lowell E. Graham and the Air Combat Command Heritage of America Band. The compo? sition was written, as the composer says, 'to showcase the extraordinary talent and musical depth of the ACC Heritage of America Band through the various moods of the work.' The wide range of moods spans from the stately, stoic cho? rale of the opening, to the rapid 'flight theme' to the tender, melodic middle section. CARL TElKE (1864-192) wrote Ow COMRADES MARCH when, at the age of 22, he was Bandmaster to the I 23rd Grenadier Regiment at VIm, Germany. Teike left Ulm and began a new stage of his career as the 'composing policemen' at Potsdam, near Berlin. His marches enjoyed immense popularity everywhere, and with Old Comrades he won worldwide fame. It is said that Teike even cre? ated a new kind of march in which 'the vigor of Pruss ian military marches is blended successfully with the tunefulness of Viennese Music.' CONDUCTORS BRAD McDAVID is Director of the University of Washington Husky Marching Band. His duties with the band include principal field conductor, show coordinator, and administrator. In addition to serving as administrative
