Lock and J. J. van der Dussen, 2016. CGILS Phase 2 LES intercomparison of response of subtropical marine low cloud regimes to CO2 quadrupling and a CMIP3-composite forcing change. J. Adv. Model. Earth Syst., Under revision. This paper studies the response of idealized, high-resolution simulations of boundary layer clouds over the Northeast Pacific Ocean to idealized climate perturbations: a quadrupling of carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere and a composite climate perturbation that approximates equilibrium conditions with doubled carbon dioxide. Three locations (denoted S6, S11 and S12) are studies that have differing cloud climatologies: shallow cumulus convection (S6), decoupled stratocumulus (S11) and coastal stratocumulus (S12). Several high-resolution large eddy simulation (LES) models simulate the cloud-topped marine boundary layer at these locations both in the control and perturbed climates. The files included here provide: - the setup of the experiments (in the Forcing/ directory) - the output produced by the models (in Data/) - scripts to produce plots and a table describing the results (in Figures/) Below is a list of subdirectories and description of their contents. A full manifest of the tar file is included at the bottom. Forcings/ - pdf file with description of case setup. - fortran programs to generate stretched grids for S11 and S12 Forcings/S6_Forcings/ Forcings/S11_Forcings/ Forcings/S12_Forcings/ - netcdf forcing files for the control climate case and various climate perturbations for the three locations. The format of the forcing files follows the specifications for the single column version of the Community Atmosphere Model. - For a description of the case design, see Zhang et al (2012). - Previous results based on these cases are described in Zhang et al (2013), Blossey et al (2013) and Bretherton et al (2013). Data/ - Model output for the three locations and three cases (control, quadrupled carbon dioxide and composite climate perturbation). - Note that WRF only supplied results for S6. - Models are described an appendix of Blossey et al (2013), except for DALES whose changes since that paper are mentioned in Blossey et al (2016). Data/DALES - Output from the Dutch Atmospheric Large Eddy Simulation Model Data/LaRC - Output from the NASA Langley Research Center LES Model Data/MOLEM - Output from the UK Met Office Large Eddy Model w/modified momentum advection Data/SAMA - Output from the System for Atmospheric Modeling w/modified scalar advection Data/UCLA - Output from the University of California, Los Angeles Large Eddy Simulation Model Data/WRF - Output from the Weather Research and Forcasting Model Figures/ - To regenerate the figures from Blossey et al (2016) along with additional diagnostic plots, run the plot_all script in MATLAB. - Matlab scripts that can be used to reproduce the figures in the paper and also produce diagnostic plots showing timeseries and mean profiles from days 8-10 of the various simulations. - While minor deviations from the case specifications can be seen in these diagnostic plots, these are not thought to affect the results and were tolerated due to the cost of the simulations, typically thousands of cpu-hours for each case. - Note that the colorscale.m function was downloaded from matlab central and its inclusion in this archive is permitted under the terms of its license, which is in colorscale.license Figures/PaperFigures/ - Directory that will figures from Blossey et al (2016) when script plot_all script is run in MATLAB.
