In the twentieth century, Aurora Avenue grew into a major highway in the middle of Seattle. Homes gave way to businesses which advertised through bright highway signs. This paper documents these signs, and reports on interviews with business owners on Aurora. How can stakeholders reconcile opposing visions for the highway? The authors explore these and other questions relating to Seattle's iconic manifestation of the car culture.
