The Beauty of Molokai'i
MetadataShow full item record
The Beauty of Molokai'i combines four diverse elements to explore identity and story through associative language and imagery. These four elements include experimental prose/poetry, surrealistic dream journeys, traditional fiction, and transition stages entitled "gates" in a seven-chapter construct that tells a fictional life/death/life coming-of-age story. Combining thought, observation, memory, and dream within a contemporary American experience and interweaving metaphysical / fantastical elements, this piece offers an alternative female Bildungsroman/Kunstlerroman that asks more questions than it answers. The Beauty of Molokai'i was prepared as a thesis project to fulfill graduation requirements for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Poetics degree program at the University of Washington--Bothell in Spring 2014.
