The Sourmetal Smell: A Study of Structural Violence in Brazil
(2009-12)
In The Sourmetal Smell, I use the biography of Sandro de Nascimento, a former street child who infamously hijacked a Rio city bus in 2001 and was killed by the police officers who arrested him, to analyze structural violence at work in Brazil. I begin, at an international level, by examining the effects on poverty and, partly ...
Clad in Plaid: Finding the Nation in Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley
(2008-10-29)
Sir Walter Scott is the de facto national author of the Scots, writing from the early 19th century and still sending significant ripples across contemporary society despite modernity and globalization being issued from the bi-centennial gap. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the meticulous lengths Scott took in ...
A quantitative analysis of the carbon cycle and comparison of carbon remineralization rates in marine Glacier Bay, Alaska
(School of Oceanography, University of Washington, 2008-06-19)
Sediment cores were collected and analyzed for rates of carbon remineralization. It was hypothesized that the sediments beneath regions and areas of relatively high primary production rates would exhibit higher carbon remineralization rates and correspondingly, shallower oxygen penetration.
An evaluation of the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Glacier Bay, Alaska
(School of Oceanography, University of Washington, 2008-06-19)
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are carcinogenic and mutagenic pollutants that settle in sediments, and disrupt the biology of sealife. This study took sediment samples from Glacier Bay, and measured the amount of PAHs present. Comparison samples from Puget Sound were also analyzed. No PAHs were found in Glacier Bay, while ...
Lignin compound composition of post-glacial sediments in Glacier Bay, Alaska
(School of Oceanography, Unversity of Washington, 2008-06-19)
Sediments from Glacier Bay, Alaska, were analyzed to determine the vegetative source of lignin. These samples were analyzed for lignin compounds using a standard microwave digestion and gas chromatograph method. A mix of high and low concentrations of gymnosperm woods with non-woody angiosperm tissue was found, indicating ...
The Port Madison Area in the 1870s and 1880s: An Integrated Community
(2008-10-29)
This paper examines the nature of the interactions between the Native American community living on the Port Madison Indian Reservation and the settler community directly across the bay, known as Port Madison, Bainbridge Island. I particularly focus on the period of the 1870s and 1880s, and I argue that the two groups were ...

The Salvadoran civil war lasted twelve years, from 1980-1992, and resulted in the deaths of approximately 75,000 civilians. The ...
Effect of Acartia grazing on the size distribution of phytoplankton in Academy Bay, Galapagos
(2006-03)
The goal of this experiment was to determine if Acartia, a species of zooplankton, fed based on the size of food available. Acartia which more specifically are a type of copepod, have demonstrated this in other experiments. This experiment consisted of gathering seawater from Academy Bay in the Galapagos Islands, filtering ...
Reinventing Traditionalism: The Influence of Critical Reconstruction on the Shape of Berlin's Friedrichstadt
(2007-08-03)
Critical Reconstruction is an architectural and city planning theory developed by the German architect, Josef Paul Kleihues in the 1960's. This paper explores the theory's application in the Berlin district of Friedrichstadt. The political and historical significance of Critical Reconstruction as a guiding principle for ...
Endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) accumulation in Puget Sound sediments and the implications for native fish populations
(School of Oceanography, University of Washington, 2008-06-19)
Sediments from Glacier Bay and Puget Sound, Washington were analyzed for the presence of natural and synthetic estrogens and progestogens. Glacier Bay had low concentrations and Puget Sound had high concentrations. The latter finding is similar to that of other highly populated regions.
