Both sites are on the Columbia River. The excavations at Rabbit Island were initiated in August 1951, the work jointly sponsored by the National Parks Service, the University of Washington and the State College of Washington, the latter through Initiative 171 funds. The endeavor was directed by Dr. Douglas Osborne, and the author acted as the field supervisor. Work was resumed in June and July 1952 at this site, under a grant to Dr. Osborne from the Initiative 171 Fund for Biological research.
