An Inquiry Into The Maine Disaster, And Other Incidents Which Were Factors In Bringing About The Spanish-American War
Abstract
One of the most striking phases of the last quarter of the nineteenth century has been the rise of the new national imperialism. By this is meant the development of European or American control over the territory or the resources of the less powerful people outside of Europe and the United States. Methods employed in securing such control have varied from country to country and from time to time depending on the exigencies and the values involved; the most common are special treaty arrangements whereby commercial, financial, and industrial concessions are secured. Protectorates over backward areas as well as the annexation of such areas have also been resorted to in some instances. As a movement, this has varied greatly extending all the way from simply a dominating control over the commerce of a given area to ultimate political absorption.
