Abstract
This study examined the environmental differences between the plumes of the Brothers volcano's two vents. Four stressors-temperature, Eh or oxidation/reduction potential, salinity and turbidity were correlated with the community density and species compositions in the plumes. Crustaceans were noted where temperature was high and Eh levels low. Sponges and hydroids were found at lower temperatures and higher Eh levels. The physical and chemical environment of hydrothermal vents is highly variable, so to survive, fauna must use adaptive mechanisms.
