Abstract

In recent years, there has been a spike in rates of suicide among Black youths, and there’s an urgent need for this matter to be addressed. Suicide is a leading cause of death among all youths aged 10-17. (CDC). However, between 2007 and 2020, the suicide rate among Black youths ages 10-17 increased by 144%; from 1.54 per 100,000 in 2007 to 3.77 per 100,000 in 2020. (John Hopkins). First, we plan to review factors that contribute to increasing rates of suicide among Black youths via a brief literature review. Then, we will examine opportunities for improving suicide care among Black youths within a large healthcare system in Washington State via descriptive statistical analysis of the reach and outcomes of existing suicide prevention clinical practices. I will then work to develop recommendations to help improve suicide care among Black Youths, supported by a literature review.
