At the outset, let us examine in a general way, the point of view of the people of the Restoration Comedy World. Let us try to discover what their chief interests were. First, what did they think of the world in which they lived? Then, what was their attitude toward politics, business, affairs of state? What were the superstitions of the age? In what position socially, do we find women? And lastly, out of all this discussion, does there emerge one real vital pursuit, strong enough to dominate the actions of the ladies and their gallants?
