Indigenous Matrix: Northwest Women Printmakers

Abstract

Indigenous Matrix: Northwest Women Printmakers is an exhibition hosted at Seattle Art Museum that runs from June 15th, 2022 through December 15th, 2022. Curated by an Indigenous female scholar, this exhibit is a first for the museum, prompting increased accessibility for emerging museum professionals of color. This gallery presents the works of two prominent artists, Susan Point and Francis Dick, and a selection of stonecut prints by four Inuit artists: Angotigolu Teevee, Jessie Oonark, Myra Kukiiyuat, and Pitseolak Ashoona. Curating and exhibiting Native artists such as these within a museum setting broadens and promotes the discussions that Museology professionals are having regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Additionally, the public will encounter works of art in Seattle Art Museum's collection that have yet to be displayed within the galleries. Visitors will step away from the exhibit with a better understanding and appreciation of the Indigenous communities that call the Northwest their home.
