Abstract

Introduction: Latinx young adults face unique mental health challenges influenced by systemic barriers such as limited access to culturally relevant care and financial hardship, cultural values including religion, machismo, and familismo, alongside the challenge of balancing U.S and Latinx cultural expectations. While these factors can provide support they also contribute to stigma and discourage help seeking. Existing research often emphasizes these barriers but rarely centers how Latinx young adults themselves define mental health and wellbeing This study addresses the gap by exploring culturally grounded perspectives to inform more inclusive, community-based mental health interventions. Objective: This qualitative study explores Latinx young adults perceptions on mental health and the systemic, social, and cultural factors shaping these views, with the aim of informing culturally responsive interventions. Methods: A thematic analysis was conducted on 10 semi-structured interviews with Latinx young adults (ages 19-25) in Washington State. Results: Five major themes were identified from the interviews 1) what mental health and wellbeing means to Latinx young adults, 2) systemic challenges and reimagining mental health systems for Latinx communities, 3) family, peers, and cultural connection as a source of support & coping mechanisms, 4) stress, responsibility & the weight of adulting early, and 5) cultural stigma and generational silence around mental health. Participants highlight the need to improve the visibility, accessibility, and cultural relevance of mental health resources and services within Latinx communities. Conclusion: The findings of this qualitative study illustrate how systemic, social, and cultural factors shape Latinx young adults definitions, experiences, and use of mental health resources. By centering their voices, the study provides valuable insights to inform future mental health efforts. These results highlight the need for culturally relevant approaches that reflect core values such as family support, peer connection, and shared cultural identity.
