Malformation: A Remix Graphic Novel is an examination of the intersection of visual remix and narrative text: ie, a remix graphic novel. Pulling from gothic literature, it explores an American city where things are a little unsettled, populated by strange radio signals, streets which recurse on themselves, and demons which steal your voice. The material is sourced entirely from free use stock image repositories and personal photographs, then digitally collaged to create narrative structure. Malformation challenges what an image is, not one whole but many smaller wholes which can be disconnected and reattached to build new context and stories, while still carrying a through line. What is a demon but the talons of a hawk, a dog leg, a face, and someone else’s smile?
