Abstract

It has long been recognized that the quality of performance in most competitive sports is affected by an individual's running speed. In soccer, the coach looks for the player who combines fundamental skills with the ability to perform short bursts of speed. The individual must be able not only to accelerate into the open space to be in a position to take a pass but also to move quickly into the open space to defend against an opposing player. Baseball is a game often decided by the individual's ability for bursts of speed between the baseso The basketball coach looks for the forward who can sweep the backboards and then fast-break down the floor ahead of the opposition.
