Abstract
Geographic Information Study Guide (GISG) is the name of a high school level, online lesson plan I created using data, visualization and analysis tools available through Esri. For the purposes of this publication, GISG refers to the first published lesson using the format. The aim of the lesson is to provide students with an engaging and empowering introduction to applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and current environmental and sociological research topics by exploring concrete, personally relevant data gathered from their local geography. The website functions not as a piece of scientific or theoretical research, but as a working piece of science communication designed primarily for a target audience of Seattle high school students. The main text of this thesis explains the rationale behind the conceptual and design choices behind the GISG online learning tool, as well as GISG’s applications, limitations, and potential avenues for future development.
