Behind the Scenes: curating public Access

Abstract

This thesis project examines how opening collections storage spaces to the public can increase accessibility and engagement at the Edmonds Historical Museum. Many artifacts are typically kept out of view; this project proposes guided tours, interpretive plaques, and volunteer training to make these materials more visible and meaningful. By bringing visitors into the collections space, the museum can highlight preservation and cataloging practices while encouraging community members to contribute knowledge that may help identify or contextualize objects.The project resulted in a functional tour program by Spring 2026, along with interpretive materials and staff guidelines. Despite challenges related to accessibility, preservation, and staffing, this project demonstrates how increased access can foster a more collaborative, engaging, and community-centered museum experience.
