History in Sound; a descriptive listing of the KIRO-CBS collection of broadcasts of the World War II years and after, in the Phonoarchive of the University of Washington

Abstract

Catalogs a valuable collection of World War II radio broadcasts by the Columbia Broadcasting System. It includes news broadcasts, addresses by important public figures, discussions, and documentaries, as well as recordings of more recent events, deposited in the phonoarchive at the University of Washington. Chronicles the rise of the broadcast medium as a new and vigorous force in twentieth-century journalism. Beginning with Hitler's address of January 1, 1939, it continues through early World News Roundups to the audio portion of the first interchange via the communications satellite Telstar and President Kennedy's address of October 22, 1962, conconerning the crisis in Cuba. Those programs annotated in the text have been transcribed to sound tape; the original disc versions remain in the Phonoarchive of the University of Washington.
