This thesis investigates the relationship between a modern society and a traditional society within a cultural landscape. The investigation focuses on culture, economics, and site as aspect of cultural identity of the place. It is my belief that the synthesis of past and present in any cultural landscape (urban or rural) is critical to creating a regional identity which celebrates the unique aspects of place. The project proposes to convert an abandoned port wine cellar, Caves da Real Companhia Velha, located Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal into a Portuguese Cultural Center for the Performing Arts and Cinema. The project adapts a new use into these rich vernacular building of the porto wine manufacturer. These buildings, along with many like them in this part of Portugal are valuable in defining the regional and cultural history of the place. The project seeks to weave the old and the new. An understanding of the unique characteristics of the place helps to create a modern regional architecture.en_US
