Abstract

Shelley's drama The Cenci, like the poet himself, has been a controversial subject among literary scholars from the time of its composition in 1819 to the present day. During the intervening years, it has run the gamut of criticism from nadir to zenith and back again; it has even reached the opposite points simultaneously, so great has been the diversity of opinion among critics.
