This case study investigates the processes by which Positive Youth Development (PYD) occurs in the Generation Green program of the U.S. Forest Service. Data were gathered using the qualitative methods of participant-observation and semi-structured interviews. Fourteen participants were interviewed to understand how youth conceptualize the developmental impact of this environmental conservation program. Using a grounded theory approach, interviews were coded line-by-line, and a constant comparative analysis was performed to develop a conceptual framework for PYD taking place through Generation Green. Five primary themes emerged from participants’ accounts of experiences in the program: personal rejuvenation, visceral experiences, supportive relationships, career development, and intrinsic motivation. The cultivation of these assets in youth is facilitated by the dedication of program coordinators and by the rich developmental context of the program. Despite challenges presented by Forest Service administration of the program, Generation Green should be seen as a model for Positive Youth Development in the outdoors.
