Item type: Item , A New Kind Of Urban Campus - Urban Design Capstone(2024-06-07) Njoroge, BrianRejuvenating a Historic University Campus: A Masterplan for UW Tacoma Brian Njoroge This thesis explores the potential of urban design and masterplanning to revitalize UW Tacoma, a university nestled within a historic industrial district undergoing rapid transformation. The campus itself boasts a unique character, with repurposed warehouses and factories housing modern academic functions. However, challenges abound. The site's topography presents significant elevation changes, and a polluted plume necessitates creative solutions. Furthermore, the university grapples with balancing growth and maintaining its distinct identity while integrating with the surrounding burgeoning convention center, hospital, brewery district, and residential areas. Through a multi-week engagement process involving surveys, workshops, and stakeholder interviews, this thesis proposes a masterplan rooted in six key principles: Climate Action, ADA Accessibility, Hub Creation, Pedestrian-Friendly Design,Green Infrastructure, and Community Equity. This framework aims to achieve integrated land uses, vibrant green spaces and improved accessibility, fostering a welcoming environment for all. The findings highlight the crucial role of thoughtful development in preserving the campus's historic character while contributing to the broader revitalization of downtown Tacoma. This study offers valuable insights for other urban universities facing similar challenges of balancing growth with preservation in a rapidly changing environment.Item type: Item , 2024 Urban Design Capstone Report: Students' vision for UW Tacoma campus(University of Washington Tacoma, School of Urban Studies, 2025) Chastain, Matthew; Akinshev, Angelina; Gomez-Lopez, Miguel; Hap, Mason; Jones, Aaliya; Manjarrez-Hurtado, Miryan; Njoroge, Brian; Williams, Patrick; Yusuf, Mohamed; Zhai, Peijie; Šafářová, BáraThis report is a collection of works produced during the two-quarter long (22 weeks) undergraduate Urban Design Capstone course at the University of Washington Tacoma during the winter and spring quarters of 2024.
