Title: Research on student understanding of quantum mechanics as a guide for improving instruction

Abstract: This dissertation reports on an investigation of student understanding of topics in quantum mechanics that are at a level appropriate for the third year of undergraduate study. Initially, the focus was on student ability to relate classical and quantum mechanics. This early research led naturally to the investigation of student understanding of time-dependence, which is the primary emphasis in this dissertation. Research on student learning of more advanced topics ensued. The conceptual and reasoning difficulties that were identified have informed the development of tutorials to improve student learning. Initial assessment of that curriculum has yielded encouraging results.
