The perturbative and non-perturbative QCD effects in the azimuthal distribution of hadron jets observed in muon deep inelastic scattering

Abstract

Azimuthal asymmetry of hadron jets produced in deep inelastic muon scattering is studied for the first time. The data were collected at the experiment E665 at Fermilab during 1991-1992 using liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. The muon beam had a mean energy of 500 GeV. A detailed study of various popular algorithms for identifying jets within an event leads us to choose the modified JADE algorithm and the Ellis-Soper algorithm for the energy range of this experiment. A total of 148639 events with $Q\sp2>3\ GeV\sp2$ and $W\sp2>25\ GeV\sp2$ are used in this analysis. Using the identified 2-jet events we studied the azimuthal distributions of the jets in the center of mass frame of the target and virtual photon. Comparison with the perturbative QCD prediction is made.
