Abstract

This thesis explores concepts for the urban university in response to the growing use of automation and artificial intelligence in the current Fourth Industrial Revolution. With the anticipated loss of nearly half of all jobs we have today, new forms of technology will disrupt the economy and society in unexpected ways while also creating opportunities to improve the quality of human life, help solve urgent global issues, and further the potential of human creativity. Critical to the successful integration of this unprecedented technological change is to revolutionize higher education and training. This design proposes a new research institute in Denny Triangle, Seattle that applies the principles of cybernetic theory to set a new paradigm for campus spatial planning and design. The Cybernetic Campus is an experimental space embedded in the city, focused not only in the development of knowledge but also its dissemination.
