| dc.description.abstract | Lobate ctenophores such as the Salish Sea species Bolinopsis microptera serve as top-down regulators of plankton ecosystems. These generalists have been linked to declines in zooplankton and forage fish populations due to their complex predatory behavior. Prior research demonstrates that lobate ctenophores rely on mechanical cues for prey detection, but also exhibit anticipatory responses to prey prior to contact, suggesting a reliance on additional sensory cues. To determine the role of chemoreception in predatory behavior of Bolinopsis microptera, individuals were exposed to a crustacean olfactory cue. We did not observe any significant effect of crustacean olfactory cues on ctenophore predation behavior, however behavioral trends consistent with response to olfactory cues were observed. | |
